Glasgow’s Free Fireworks Display Could Make a Comeback

Glasgow’s Free Fireworks Display Could Make a Comeback

Glasgow’s fireworks fans, it’s time to dust off your woolly hats and find your best vantage point—because a free public display might just be on the cards again this year.

After a five-year hiatus, the city council is looking at setting aside £100,000 from the Common Good Fund to bring back the much-loved November event. It’s still in the early stages, but the idea has cross-party support, which means there’s a decent chance of seeing fireworks light up Glasgow Green once more.

The Push to Bring Back the Display

The last official display in Glasgow took place in 2019, but since then, the city has gone without, leaving many turning to DIY back-garden displays or paying to go to private shows.

But now, thanks to Scottish Greens councillor Jon Molyneux, the council is exploring options to revive the public event. He put forward an amendment to ring-fence £100,000 for a fireworks display, which was backed by all local politicians in a city administration committee meeting on this month.

Molyneux made the case that a city-run event would align with the fire service’s preference for organised displays. He also pointed out that other councils use their Common Good Funds for similar events, so why not Glasgow? With £400,000 in the pot, he argued that £100,000 could go a long way towards giving Glaswegians a spectacular night out.

What Happens Next?

Now that the proposal has been approved, council officers will look into what’s possible within the budget. The idea isn’t necessarily just to resurrect the big Glasgow Green display—there’s also the possibility of smaller local events across the city. Molyneux highlighted that in Lanarkshire, two councils work together to put on a major display at Strathclyde Country Park for just £60,000. So, if they can do it, surely Glasgow can too?

Will It Actually Happen?

That’s the big question. Right now, it’s a case of wait and see. The budget has been set aside, but the practical details still need to be worked out. If all goes well, Glasgow could see the return of a proper fireworks display.

For now, it’s fingers crossed. But if things go to plan, Glaswegians might just get their sky lit up again this November.
