Celebrate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day with Fireworks

This May marks 80 years since Britain erupted into cheers, tears and quite possibly the best street parties the country had ever seen. Victory in Europe Day, or VE Day, isn’t just another date on the calendar – it’s a full-blown moment in history, and one that deserves to be celebrated properly.

And by properly, we mean with cake, a cracking playlist, and yes – fireworks. Because what better way to honour the end of wartime darkness than by lighting up the night sky?

What is VE Day and Why Does it Matter?

VE Day – that’s Victory in Europe Day – marks the momentous occasion when the Second World War came to an end in Europe. On 8 May 1945, millions poured into the streets to rejoice as Nazi Germany surrendered, bringing six long years of conflict to a close.

Fast forward 80 years, and while the veterans are fewer and the stories a little further away, the spirit of remembrance and celebration lives on. VE Day is a chance for us to honour courage, toast to peace, and maybe even belt out a classic wartime tune after one too many sausage rolls.

Why Fireworks Are a Perfect Fit for VE Day

Back in 1945, the celebrations were spontaneous – bonfires, street parties, and plenty of flag waving. If fireworks had been easier to come by back then, you can bet your ration book they’d have been lighting up the skies.

Fireworks have always been tied to national celebration. From New Year’s Eve to Bonfire Night, we love a bit of sparkle overhead. So it makes perfect sense to use them to mark VE Day – a moment of national pride and unity.

They're loud, they're proud, and they turn a quiet cul-de-sac into a full-blown spectacle. What better way to pay tribute to a truly historic day?

Planning a VE Day Firework Display at Home

If you’re thinking about putting on a back garden display, here are a few tips to make sure it’s all bang and no bother:

  • Check the time: By UK law, fireworks can be used until 11pm on most days – VE Day included.

  • Give the neighbours a heads-up: A polite note through the door goes a long way (especially if they’ve got pets).

  • Keep it safe: Always follow safety instructions on the fireworks, have a bucket of water nearby, and never return to a dud.

  • Pick the right products: Not all fireworks are created equal – if you want something loud and proud, go for cakes, barrages or rockets. Want to keep it quieter? Low-noise fireworks offer all the sparkle without the sonic boom.

VE Day Themed Party Ideas (with Fireworks, Naturally)

You don’t need a street full of bunting and a Winston Churchill impersonator to get into the VE Day spirit – though we’re not saying no to either.

Here are a few ideas to get the Union Jacks flying:

  • Host a garden tea party with a firework finale. Scones, bunting, and a well-timed rocket or two at sunset – perfection.

  • Recreate the wartime vibe with 1940s music, vintage dress and a good old-fashioned sing-along before the display.

  • Keep it educational and inspiring – involve the kids by sharing stories from the era, then light up the sky in tribute.

Firework Etiquette for Commemorations

VE Day isn’t just about having a celebration – it’s also about remembrance. So, a few final thoughts:

  • Choose fireworks that reflect the tone of your celebration. For more reflective moments, low-noise fountains and gentle firework effects can be beautifully respectful.

  • Be mindful of animals and vulnerable neighbours. A little courtesy goes a long way.

  • Remember why you’re celebrating. The sound of fireworks can echo the distant memory of gunfire – but today, they symbolise joy, not conflict.
