Worthing Lions Bonfire Night Cancelled – Here’s Where to Go Instead!

Worthing Lions Bonfire Night Cancelled – Here’s Where to Go Instead!

Bad news, Worthing. The Lions’ much-loved Bonfire Night event on the pier won’t be happening this year. After 25 years of lighting up the sky, the fireworks have fallen victim to an unfortunate mix of storm damage and engineering woes. Turns out, a pier that’s taken a pounding from high winds and rough seas isn’t always the best launchpad for an explosive display, even if it does deliver an awesome backdrop for a display. And while Worthing Borough Council and the Lions have worked tirelessly to come up with alternatives, it’s simply not feasible to move such a large event on short notice.

Council leader Sophie Cox had the tough job of breaking the news, explaining that even if you fancied watching the fireworks from a safe distance, the pier still needs extra structural support before it’s ready for anyone—even if it’s just a few people gathered for set up and firing. With repairs set to resume in November, the council’s doing everything it can to get the pier back in shape, but for now, it remains closed.

The real kicker here is that this isn’t just a night out for Worthing residents; it’s a significant fundraising event for the Lions, with about a third of their annual donations coming from the bonfire festivities. As Worthing Lions’ Kevin Hawkes put it, they’re understandably gutted, but they’re already planning to make 2025’s display “bigger and better.” So, we’ll just have to save a bit of that bonfire spirit for next year.

But don’t stash your sparklers just yet!
