Why West Lothian Is Ditching Firework Control Zones
West Lothian isn’t looking to ban fireworks anytime soon—and honestly, it’s got the right idea.
According to the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS), the area doesn’t need the newly introduced Firework Control Zones. Why? Because working with communities and educating people is the better solution.
Over the past few years, partnerships between local authorities, schools, and community groups have done a solid job at keeping Bonfire Night trouble to a minimum. Reports of anti-social behaviour last November 5th were significantly lower than in previous years, and only one incident of violence against emergency services was recorded. Compare that to places like Niddrie—where they did introduce control zones, and it didn’t stop absolute chaos breaking out—and you start to see the point.
Now, let’s be honest. It’s never been the fireworks that are the problem. A Catherine wheel has never kicked off at a paramedic. Sparklers aren’t out there causing mayhem. It’s a small group of troublemakers who will cause problems regardless of the rules.
So instead of restricting firework use, West Lothian has taken the smarter approach: focus on education, community engagement, and responsible use rather than blanket bans that punish the majority for the actions of a few.
The local fire service was busy in the run-up to Bonfire Night, working with schools, clearing up potential bonfire hazards, and spreading safety messages on social media. And guess what? It worked.
Areas like Blackburn, once branded a war zone on Bonfire Night, have turned things around with community action groups. Instead of banning fun for everyone, they’ve made sure fireworks can be enjoyed safely.
Councillor Craig Meek summed it up nicely when he praised the multi-agency effort, saying the proof is in the pudding—education and community collaboration make a difference. And he’s right. Instead of slapping down control zones and hoping for the best, West Lothian has taken a hands-on approach, proving that fireworks don’t have to mean chaos.
At the end of the day, fireworks are meant to be fun. They’re about gathering with friends and family and enjoying a bit of a show. Used properly, they bring excitement and joy—not trouble.
So, if you’re planning to put on your own display, do it responsibly. Follow safety advice, respect your neighbours, and enjoy the spectacle.
