Watch Europe's Biggest Fireworks Spectacle in Budapest, Hungary

If you’re a fan of fireworks, then Budapest was the place to be this August. Hungary marked its national day, Saint Stephen's Day, with what is being hailed as Europe's biggest fireworks display, and it was nothing short of spectacular. Despite a bit of a hiccup with the weather, the show went on, and it was an event to remember.

Grand Celebration Delayed by Rain

Originally set to kick off earlier in the evening, the fireworks display faced a slight delay due to unexpected rain. Local meteorologists had incorrectly predicted the weather, causing the start of the event to be pushed back by an hour. But as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait, and the thousands of spectators who lined the banks of the Danube River were certainly not disappointed.

Spectacle Over the Danube River

This year’s Saint Stephen's Day celebrations were particularly special as Hungary celebrated more than 1,000 years since the establishment of its state.

The fireworks were launched from seven barges and 65 pontoons spread over a 4.5-kilometre stretch of the Danube River, between Petőfi Bridge and Margaret Bridge, with additional displays from Elizabeth and Liberty Bridges. The 30-minute pyrotechnic extravaganza lit up the night sky, creating a breathtaking spectacle that was visible from all around Budapest.

Putting on a show of this magnitude doesn’t come cheap. Local media reported that the event, including the fireworks, drones, and narration, cost over €38 million to stage. While the price tag might raise some eyebrows, the spectacle delivered was undoubtedly worth every penny, leaving the hundreds of thousands of onlookers in awe.

An Event for the Record Books

Whether you were lucky enough to be there in person or just catching up with the highlights online, there’s no denying that this was one of Europe’s most impressive fireworks displays to date. Budapest has once again proven that when it comes to putting on a show, they know how to do it in style.
