The Ultimate Guide to At-Home Firework Displays: Part One - Buying Fireworks in the UK

Fireworks at home are a treat, but they come with some responsibility. Whether you’re into rockets, fountains, or sparklers, a little bit of knowledge goes a long way in being able to create a fun, exciting and most importantly, a safe display!

In this series of articles we're going to cover the everything from buying your fireworks, how to store them, setting them up, keeping everyone safe, and we'll even cover some key first aid essentials.

We'll be sharing a new article every day so make sure you bookmark this page so you can come back and follow along.

So, without further ado, let's jump into Part 1...

Buying Fireworks in the UK: How to Shop Smart and Safe

Before you even think about setting off a single firework, you’ll want to make sure you’re buying the right ones from a safe, reputable source.

Not all fireworks are created equal, and with so many choices—from roman candles to rockets—it’s worth knowing how to pick wisely. Here are some straightforward tips for buying fireworks that will make your display a winner, not a washout.

Know Your Sources: Stick to Licensed Sellers Only

First things first, don’t buy fireworks from any old place. Sure, that pop-up stall by the side of the road might have eye-catching prices, but if they’re not licensed, the fireworks may not meet UK safety standards (or worse, they could be duds or downright dangerous).

  • Look for Licensed Retailers: Only buy from shops and online retailers licensed to sell fireworks. Big supermarkets, specialist shops, and trusted websites will have official licenses, ensuring their fireworks meet UK safety regulations.
  • Avoid the Under-the-Counter Bargains: If someone’s offering you a ‘great deal’ on fireworks out of the boot of their car, politely decline. These aren’t just dodgy; they could be illegal, untested, or unsafe.

Buy the Right Category: Check for CE Marks

Fireworks in the UK are grouped into categories, and for home use, you’re mainly looking at Category 2 and Category 3. These are designed to be safe for consumer use in back gardens or larger spaces. When shopping, make sure all products have a CE mark, which shows they’ve been tested to meet safety standards.

  • Category 2: These are smaller, quieter, and designed for use in smaller spaces (about 5 to 8 metres of clearance). Perfect for smaller back gardens or if you’re after something a bit quieter.
  • Category 3: These pack more punch and need more space (typically 25 metres). Great if you’re going for a more dramatic display and have the room to keep everyone safe.
  • Avoid Category 4: These are professional-grade and not for public sale. If you come across one, something’s very wrong—leave it well alone!

Pick Your Fireworks Wisely: Choosing the Right Types

When shopping, it’s worth knowing the difference between a rocket and a roman candle. A well-rounded display usually involves a mix of types, so think about what kind of show you want to put on:

  • Rockets: High-flying and explosive, these are your classic “ooo” and “ahhh” makers. Look for mid-sized ones with bright colours to wow without overwhelming.
  • Roman Candles: These shoot coloured stars into the air and are great for adding a bit of variety to your show.
  • Fountains: These stay grounded, creating a crackling, sparkling display that’s perfect for a close-up spectacle.
  • Mines and Barrages: A bit more intense, these create a sequence of blasts and are great as showstoppers but need space to enjoy safely.
  • Wheels: Attach these to a secure post, and they’ll spin, spark, and dazzle with minimal fuss.

Set a Budget: Fireworks Aren’t Cheap, But Safety is Priceless

Fireworks can be pricey, so plan a budget that suits you without skimping on safety. Cheap, questionable fireworks aren’t worth the risk, but it’s also worth noting that sometimes the fanciest, priciest ones don’t add much to a home show if space is limited. Aim for a mix that suits your location and audience:

  • Consider Quality Over Quantity: Fewer, high-quality fireworks make a better impression than a mountain of budget bangers.
  • Look for Display Packs: Many sellers offer bundles with a bit of everything, giving you variety without breaking the bank.

Check the Labels: Follow the Instructions, They’re There for a Reason!

Every firework should come with clear instructions on how to use it safely, and it’s worth reading them before buying. Some fireworks need more space than you might realise or might not be ideal for certain setups.

  • Read Safety Distances: Make sure you can meet the recommended distance for your setup. If the label suggests a 25-metre clearance, don’t use it in a small back garden.
  • Check the Duration: Some fireworks last longer than others. Make a mental note so you can keep things flowing smoothly on the night without any surprises.

Buying Online? Look for UK-Based, Reputable Retailers

Buying online can be handy, but take extra caution here. Stick to UK-based, licensed retailers, and make sure the fireworks meet British standards. Avoid international sellers who may not comply with UK regulations.
