Stand Up for Fireworks: Why You Should Speak to Your MP Before the Upcoming Debate

Fireworks have been a cherished part of British celebrations for centuries. From Bonfire Night to New Year’s Eve and weddings to Diwali, they bring people together and create memories that last a lifetime. Yet, a looming debate in Westminster could pave the way for significant restrictions on your ability to buy and enjoy them at home.

A petition calling for fireworks to be limited solely to professional displays is set to be debated in Westminster Hall at 4:30pm on Monday 9 December 2024. If you love fireworks and want to protect your right to enjoy them responsibly, now is the time to act. Contact your local MP and share your thoughts before this critical discussion takes place.

What’s the Debate About?

The petition, argues that fireworks should only be available for professional shows. It claims this would ensure fireworks are “handled safely, cleanly, and at predictable times”.

In response, the Government stated on 1 November 2023:
"We have no plans to ban the sale of fireworks to the public but continue to monitor the situation. We believe the majority of individuals use fireworks safely and appropriately."

Despite this, the debate led by Robbie Moore MP could influence future policies. Voices from both sides will weigh in, and your MP needs to hear your views to represent you fairly.

Safe and Responsible Firework Use Is Key

Let’s be clear: no one condones the misuse of fireworks. Reckless behaviour puts lives at risk, causes distress to pets and wildlife, and can tarnish the joy for everyone. That’s why safety should always come first.

But banning fireworks for public use is not the solution. The vast majority of firework enthusiasts handle them responsibly, following safety guidelines and respecting their neighbours. Rather than punishing everyone for the actions of a few, we should focus on education, enforcement of existing laws, and stricter penalties for those who misuse them.

Why Your Voice Matters

Restrictions on firework sales could drastically change how we celebrate. Imagine a Bonfire Night without the excitement of setting off your own rockets in the garden or sparklers at a family barbecue. Professional displays are wonderful, but they’re not always accessible or affordable for everyone, particularly families or those in rural areas.

By contacting your MP, you can highlight the importance of keeping fireworks available to the public while promoting safe use. MPs represent their constituents, and your opinion can shape how they contribute to the debate.

How to Contact Your MP

Getting in touch with your MP is straightforward:

  1. Find your MP’s details. Use the UK Parliament website to locate your MP by entering your postcode.
  2. Write a clear and respectful email or letter. Share your personal experiences with fireworks, emphasise their importance to you, and express your support for responsible use over outright bans.
  3. Act quickly. With the debate happening on 9 December, time is of the essence.

Points to Consider in Your Message

  • Stress the cultural and personal significance of fireworks in your life.
  • Emphasise the importance of individual responsibility and safety education.
  • Highlight the impact a ban would have on families, rural communities, and local celebrations.
  • Suggest alternatives, like tighter enforcement of existing regulations, to address concerns without banning public sales.

Don’t Let Misuse Ruin It For Everyone

The vast majority of fireworks are enjoyed safely and responsibly, bringing joy to millions across the UK every year. Let’s not allow the actions of a small minority to cast a shadow over a tradition that brings joy into our lives.

Take a moment to write to your MP and ensure your voice is heard. Together, we can protect the right to enjoy fireworks responsibly while championing safety and respect for all.
