Southend’s First-Ever New Year’s Eve Fireworks: What You Need to Know

Looking for a new way to say goodbye to 2024? Southend-on-Sea is pulling out all the stops with its first-ever New Year’s Eve fireworks displays along the iconic seafront.

With two free shows lighting up the Essex skies, it’s a brilliant way for families, couples, and party-goers alike to welcome in 2025.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of this landmark event.

What’s Happening?

Southend’s seafront will host not one but two spectacular fireworks displays on Tuesday, 31st of December. The first display is a family-friendly affair at 6pm, perfect for early-night revellers and little ones who won’t make it to midnight.

The second show kicks off as the clock strikes twelve, ensuring a stunning start to the new year.

Both displays will launch from a barge just east of Southend Pier, with City Beach being the best place to catch the action.

How to Get There

If you’re coming from further afield, Southend is easy to reach.

By train, hop on a service to Southend Central or Southend Victoria—both are within walking distance of the seafront. C2C services from London Fenchurch Street are particularly handy for those coming from the capital.

Driving? Arrive early to secure a parking spot, as spaces close to the seafront will fill up quickly. The Royals Shopping Centre car park is a good bet, but you may need to park further out and walk down if you arrive late in the evening.

Be prepared for road closures near the seafront, as safety measures will likely be in place.

Where to Watch the Fireworks

The prime viewing area is City Beach, offering front-row seats to the pyrotechnic action. That said, the fireworks will be visible from most points along the seafront. If you want a less crowded experience, consider heading slightly further away from the pier, but bear in mind that the atmosphere will be the most electric at City Beach.

What to Do Before the Show

Arriving early? Southend’s seafront is packed with activities to keep you entertained. Treat yourself to a bag of hot doughnuts or fish and chips from one of the many local vendors, or explore the arcades for some nostalgic fun.

Fancy a sit-down meal? The Roslin Beach Hotel offers a more refined dining experience and is one of the event’s supporters.

For families attending the 6pm display, why not make a day of it by visiting Adventure Island or taking a stroll along Southend Pier, the longest pleasure pier in the world? It’s a fantastic way to build up to the early fireworks before heading home for a cosy night in.

Top Tips for Enjoying the Event

  • Arrive early. Whether you’re attending the 6pm or midnight display, arriving early ensures you’ll grab a great spot and avoid last-minute stress.
  • Dress warmly. December nights on the Essex coast are chilly, so layer up to stay comfortable while you wait for the show.
  • Keep an eye on the little ones. Crowds are expected, especially for the midnight display, so make sure children stay close.
  • Bring cash. While many vendors now accept cards, having some cash on hand for snacks and drinks is always a good idea.

Who’s Behind the Fireworks?

The displays are the result of a community-wide effort led by the Southend Tourism Partnership. Local businesses, including Kingpins Southend, the Royals Shopping Centre, and the Roslin Beach Hotel, have come together with Southend-on-Sea City Council to make this event happen. It’s a celebration of Southend’s spirit and an exciting addition to the city’s events calendar.

Can’t Make It to the Seafront?

No ticket is required, but if you can’t make it to the seafront, there are plenty of ways to celebrate in Southend. The city boasts a great selection of pubs, restaurants, and bars, many of which will be hosting their own New Year’s Eve events.

Why Southend’s Fireworks Are a Big Deal

This is the first time Southend has hosted a New Year’s Eve fireworks display, and it’s already generating plenty of buzz. As Councillor Matt Dent put it: “Southend is a city that loves to celebrate, and these displays are another way we’re making Southend a premier destination.”

Whether you’re a local or visiting from further afield, Southend’s seafront fireworks are shaping up to be an unmissable way to ring in 2025.
