Matlock Bath in the beautiful County of Derbyshire is a bit like having the essence of a trip to the coast without the sea!

A quaint and ‘Olde Worlde’ Spa Town made popular during the Victorian Era when the natural warms springs were said to cure-all ills. In fact, so beautiful a place Lord Byron dubbed it ‘Little Switzerland’ thanks to the scenic resemblance with the steep rocky hillsides.

Today, the town is a delightful place where the pace of life is almost on hold … there are some beautiful places to visit around the town too with access to all manner of outdoor activities including climbing (High Tor is in the middle of the town) abseiling, canoeing and of course, caving. There are some of the best caves in Derbyshire than in any other area of the UK.

The Matlock Bath Illuminations were first held in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee and today, in its 117th year they feature any number of highly decorated models on board a boat which float majestically on the River Derwent and as darkness falls they almost appear to be gliding above the water.

Some of the previous models created are a horse and carriage, Thomas the Tank engine, a beautiful gondola, racing cars and motorbikes, a lorry and on one occasion a Taj Mahal so there is no shortage of things to see.

This year, five fantastic firework displays will wow the crowds with breathtaking bursts over the town. Although the illumination parades will be from 6th September until the 25th October 2014, the Saturday Fireworks spectacular will start from 27th September.

Having been fortunate enough to attend this event in the past, it is a magical evening of entertainment for all the family and the fireworks being high on the hillside means that the noise is not as intense without losing sight of the beautiful sky art.
