2014 marks the 13th Annual Malta International Fireworks competition to mark the Island’s accession to the European Union on 1st May 2004 and brings together some of the best pyro display teams from across the globe to battle it out to become Malta’s Fireworks Champion.

This year, numerous Maltese and foreign fireworks factories will compete against each other displaying their prowess in choreographing fireworks to music.

Fireworks have enjoyed a long tradition in Malta going back hundreds of years and were first recorded as being used by the Knights of St John in celebrations of the actions of the Catholic Church. It is hard to miss the legacy of the knights in Malta as they gave the island one of its most recognisable emblems; the eight pointed Maltese Cross. The Knights made their home in Valletta, the baroque fortified city built following the great siege of 1565.

Fireworks in a number of forms have featured heavily in the history of this beautiful island from mortars to Catherine Wheels used in celebration of the successes of the church from the election of a new Pope to the birth of a Prince in a friendly European state. Pyrotechnics were continually developed and still feature in many of the fiestas and religious festivals held annually on the Island of Malta during the Summer months.

The itinerary is as follows:

International Pyromusical Competition - Friday 25th April 2014
Venue: Marsaxlokk
SteyrFire - Austria
Brezac Artifices - France
Pyrotex Fireworx - United Kingdom
St. Joseph Fireworks Factory - Malta

National Fireworks Competition - Saturday 26th April 2014
Venue: Bugibba
Banda Santa Andrija Fireworks Factory - Luqa, Malta
St. George's Fireworks Factory - Qormi, Malta
Santa Marija Fireworks Factory - Mgarr, Malta
Banda l-Unjoni St. Andrew's Fireworks Factory - Luqa, Malta

Grand Finale - Wednesday 30th April 2014
Venue: Valletta Grand Harbour

The closing display has been created by the local factories working together and is bound to be absolutely stunning.

All of the competitors have won some staggering accolades on their way to the top of their game between them having taken first place at what are recognised as the best in the World in Canada, Korea and China.

We are sure that given the Maltese love of all things pyro and that they get to visit this beautiful Island AND have fireworks too, this place is on my list of places to go at some point in the future.

We will bring you news of the outcome of the competition after the finale on 30th April.
