Making Fireworks Fun for Everyone: Tips For Supporting Loved Ones With Dementia

For individuals with dementia, loud noises can be confusing, frightening, or trigger unwanted past memories.

During Bonfire Night, Diwali, New Year’s Eve, and other festivities, fireworks are a common feature. However, they can pose challenges for people living with dementia. Here are five tips for enjoying these events safely and ensuring everyone has a good time.

1. Plan Ahead - Prepare in advance before fireworks night, inform the person with dementia about the upcoming festivities. Gauge their feelings about the event and determine their level of interest in participating. Some may not want to be alone but also might not want to partake in the celebrations. Finding a shared activity can be helpful. Also, speak to neighbours about their plans. If fireworks are being set off nearby, it might be better to take the person with dementia elsewhere for a while.

2. Attend a Low-Noise Firework Event - Quiet firework events can still be enjoyable with hot chocolate, pie and peas, and bonfires. If you plan to attend a local display, ensure it’s professionally managed to adhere to strict fire and safety regulations.

3. Stay Comfortable - To help the person with dementia feel more at ease, avoid environments with too many people, excessive noise, or sudden movements. If it becomes overwhelming, have a plan to move to a quieter area or return home. Ensure they dress warmly, preferably in layers of natural fibers like cotton and wool. Offer hot beverages, checking the temperature before serving. Ear defenders or earplugs can also be useful.

4. Create an Alternative Fireworks Night - For those who prefer not to attend events, there are alternative ways to enjoy fireworks. Use sparklers at home if you have outdoor space, or watch displays from a distance or inside the house. You can also view fireworks on television or online. Celebrating with a bonfire night dinner, featuring favorite foods, can evoke pleasant memories and make the occasion special.

5. Avoid Fireworks Altogether - Fireworks aren't for everyone, and that's okay. If the person is distressed by the noise or bright flashes, consider alternative activities such as watching films, listening to audiobooks, or enjoying music together. Offer reassurance through calm conversation, touch, or hugging if the person becomes distressed.

By following these tips, you can ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone during fireworks celebrations.
