Hong Kong's Spectacular New Year's Eve Firework Display Returns After a 5-Year Hiatus

Hong Kong's Spectacular New Year's Eve Firework Display Returns After a 5-Year Hiatus

After a five-year absence, Hong Kong is set to illuminate the skies once again with its grand New Year's Eve fireworks display.

The highly anticipated 12-minute 'pyromusical' showcase promises to be the largest and most extensive yet, captivating spectators along the 1.3km expanse from Central to Causeway Bay along Victoria Harbour.

Themed "New Year New Legend," this epic spectacle will portray the beauty of nature and the changing seasons through a combination of fireworks, pyrotechnics and music. An eclectic medley of tunes, ranging from Western classical melodies to traditional Chinese instruments and contemporary beats, will accompany the New Years display.

The return of this extravagant celebration marks a significant milestone, as the event was suspended for several years due to social unrest and the subsequent impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2019, the display was called off amid anti-government protests. Following that, safety concerns due to the pandemic and restrictions prevented its revival in the following years.

But this year it's back and in the run up to midnight, revelers will enjoy a series of mini firework displays every 15 minutes leading up to the main event. Termed "wishmaking sessions," these smaller shows will symbolise aspirations for love, health, happiness, and wealth in the upcoming year. The iconic Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre will serve as the backdrop to the displays and will have a massive countdown clock projected onto its waterfront facade.

Complementing the fireworks extravaganza, a New Year's Eve market and countdown concert will take place at Kwun Tong Promenade Garden on December 30 and 31, offering visitors an opportunity to revel in the holiday cheer from 2 pm until midnight each day.

The return of the New Year's Eve fireworks display symbolises the revival of large-scale public events in Hong Kong, signifying the government's efforts to revitalise the city's vibrant nightlife and rekindle its spirit after a prolonged hiatus. As the metropolis looks forward to welcoming 2024 with a spectacular showcase, residents and visitors alike eagerly await the dazzling start to the new year.
