Back to the best of times – the fabulous 80’s. Having grown up in the eighties, I really was quite fortunate with all manner of live events up and down the country. I was lucky enough to see Michael Jackson at Roundhay Park, Leeds in 1988 for the ‘Bad’ Tour who was supported by the uber popular Kim Wilde, and contrarily, also went to Monsters of Rock in the early nineties.
This event is HUGE with some of the best-known acts from the era all taking centre stage. Lead artist for the weekend is the incredibly talented Jimmy Somerville who started out with Bronski Beat and on moving to London, created the Communards and had some hits still regularly heard today like Smalltown Boy, Never Can Say Goodbye and he was central in the creation of Band Aid, which raised millions for Ethiopia. Here are some of the artistes you can see on stage:
- GRANDMASTER FLASH – WHITE LINES
- HUE AND CRY – LABOUR OF LOVE
- BILLY OCEAN – WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH (THE TOUGH GET GOING)
- SOUL II SOUL – BACK TO LIFE (BACK TO REALITY)
- GO WEST – KING OF WISHFUL THINKING
- BANANARAMA – CRUEL SUMMER
- JOHN PARR – YOU’RE THE VOICE
- CUTTING CREW – I JUST DIED IN YOUR ARMS TONIGHT
- PLUS MANY, MANY MORE
The event will be opened by a very special show celebrating the 50th anniversary of the fabulous British Rock Band ‘QUEEN’.
There are anticipated to be around 40,000 in attendance and ticket prices vary (depending on a number of factors including how many days, whether you include camping/glamping etc). The finale will be a fantastic firework display on Sunday evening brought to you by the superb team from Titanium Fireworks who also bring the London New Year’s Eve to us all annually.
As with most of these ‘themed’ events, many of the spectators ‘dress up’ in fashion from the 80’s or indeed in a nod back to other things like Rubix cubes, sherbert dib dab dresses, timmy mallet, and the god awful ‘rara’ skirt!
Alongside the music, there will be plenty to keep you entertained with Themed food outlets, copious numbers of bars and beer tents, funfairs, and street entertainments and the Kidzone is packed with activities.
