The annual Hanse Sail Rostock welcomes 200 traditional sailing ships alongside steam and museum ships on the quayside at Rostock and Warnemunde. It is one of the World’s largest gatherings of traditional sailing ships. Ten years ago, eleven small but quick sailing ships made their way from Denmark’s City of Nysted to Rostock the day prior to the Hanse Sail which has since become a regular occurrence.
The ships represent countries across the globe including Russia, Brazil, UK, Mexico and of course from across Sweden, The Netherlands and Germany.
The event includes rides, showmen, demonstrations and culinary experiences around the world. The ships vary in age from the oldest built-in 1888 to the new reproduction craft. In 2000, the Brazilian Navy commissioned the building of the Cisne Branco (The White Swan), a tall, fully rigged ship inspired by the design of 19th century clippers which remains in use today for the education of the Brazilian Navy cadets.
There will be cruise liners, ferries, ships of all sizes and types alongside naval vessels from around the globe so it should make for a great sight.
The ethos of the event is Fair Trade and all the traders offering food and drink are tasked with ensuring that at least two of the ingredients in everything they sell are sourced from sustainable, organic fair-trade suppliers. So, whether that’s delicious ice cream or a satisfying cup of coffee, they will all be sourced fairly.
On Saturday 10th August, the evening ends with a HUGE firework display in the harbour which will light the skies over the water of the bay.
