Fireworks, Film Scores & Flock of Seagulls Hairdos: BSO Pops Returns to Meyrick Park
If you like your classical music with a side of lasers and your ‘80s bangers blasted by a full orchestra under the stars — clear your calendar. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra is back at Meyrick Park this August with not one but two open-air concerts and (wait for it…) a firework and pyrotechnic finale at both.
Grab a blanket, dust off your picnic hamper, and prepare to be musically and visually dazzled. This is not your average night at the Proms — unless the Proms started wearing neon leg warmers and throwing fireballs into the sky.
Classical Extravaganza 2.0: The Bangers Return
Friday 8th August, gates open at 6pm, show kicks off at 8pm.
First up, Classical Extravaganza 2.0 — a cracking mix of your favourite orchestral hits, with all the drama, build-up and spine-tingling crescendo you’d expect from a big night at the symphony. Think Disney’s Fantasia, Superman flying in to save the day, and Elgar getting everyone’s blood pumping. You’ll hear John Williams film scores, a bit of Borodin, some swaggering Sibelius and, of course, the absolute unit that is Tchaikovsky.
All led by conductor Enyi Okpara, whose baton might as well be a wand given the sort of magic he’ll be conducting.
And the finale? A full firework and pyrotechnic show — because what’s a classical extravaganza without a literal explosion or two?
Symphonic Smash Hits: The ‘80s – Big Tunes, Big Hair, Big Finish
Sunday 9th August, same timings, different vibe.
On the Sunday, it’s time to tease that fringe, zip up the neon boiler suit and throw yourself headfirst into the glorious chaos that was the 1980s. Symphonic Smash Hits: The '80s brings in West End stars and conductor Pete Harrison for a night of retro anthems performed like you’ve never heard them before — by a full-blown symphony orchestra.
We’re talking Madonna, Bowie, A-Ha, George Michael, Elton John, Ultravox, and a power ballad or two from Bonnie Tyler just for good measure. You’ll probably find yourself singing along. Loudly. Possibly with interpretive arm movements. It’s basically Top of the Pops meets Glyndebourne, with fireworks at the end.
Oh, and dressing up in ‘80s gear is very much encouraged. Shoulder pads, neon sweatbands, and anything from the Pat Sharp playbook all welcome.

A Symphony of Sights and Sounds
It’s not every day you get world-class music under the open sky with a spectacular firework finale — and certainly not twice in one weekend. Whether you’re a Tchaikovsky traditionalist or a closet Wham! fan with a love of loud bangs and flashing lights, there’s something for everyone at BSO Pops.
So get yourself to Meyrick Park this August, and prepare for a musical experience that’ll go off with a bang — literally.
And if watching that lot has you inspired to light up your own garden with a bit of sparkle, you know who to call. We’ve got more pyros than Pete Harrison’s encore.
