How Sparklers Are Made

You may be surprised to hear that one of our favourite things of all is a sparkler.

They hold a special place in our hearts as they're one of the only truly interactive element of a firework display that the whole family can enjoy. Plus, we all have fond memories of garden displays and being given a sparkler each to wave around and make shapes and patterns in the air.

But have you ever wondered how these fantastic little handheld fireworks are made?

In this article, we'll take a closer look at the fascinating process behind the creation of sparklers.

The Process Behind Making a Sparkler

Sparklers start their journey as a simple metal wire, usually made of steel or iron, that serves as the backbone of the sparkler. This wire undergoes a series of treatments to prepare it for its dazzling transformation.

First, the wire is meticulously cleaned and coated with a special adhesive to ensure that the chemical mixture adheres firmly to its surface. Then comes the most crucial step: the application of the chemical mixture, also known as the 'slurry' mix.

The slurry mix is carefully concocted using a combination of ingredients that create the spectacular sparks and colours we love. Potassium perchlorate serves as the oxidizer, providing the necessary oxygen for combustion. Charcoal acts as the fuel, generating the heat and light that produce the sparkler's glow. Sugar is added to the mix to stabilise the combustion process and ensure a steady burn.

For those vibrant bursts of colour, additional metal flakes are incorporated into the mixture. Strontium nitrate creates a brilliant red hue, while barium nitrate produces a dazzling green. These metal flakes react with the heat of the sparkler to produce the vivid colours that we all enjoy.

Once the wire is coated with the slurry mix, it's left to dry thoroughly. This drying process is crucial to ensure that the sparkler burns evenly and lasts for the perfect amount of time – typically around 1 to 2 minutes.

And there you have it – a sparkler is born. And now the next time you hold a sparkler in your hand you can take a moment to appreciate the intricate craftsmanship and chemistry that went into its creation. After all, there's more to these little wonders than meets the eye.

Different Types of Sparklers

Just like any other firework, sparklers come in a variety of shapes, sizes, and effects, offering something for everyone to enjoy. From the classic handheld sparklers to the dazzling cake sparklers, there's no shortage of options to add to your celebrations.

Handheld sparklers are perhaps the most iconic and popular type. These slender sticks are perfect for waving around in the air, creating trails of light as they burn. With different lengths, shapes and thicknesses available, you can choose the perfect handheld sparkler to suit your preferences and occasion and you can also use them to create your own sparkler art.

Cake sparklers, also known as ice fountains or birthday cake sparklers, are a delightful addition to any celebration cake. These sparklers are designed to be inserted directly into the cake, where they emit a shower of sparks and flames, adding a touch of magic to the festivities. With their shorter burn time and compact size, cake sparklers are ideal for indoor use and smaller gatherings.

Safety With Sparklers

Remember, while sparklers are a great addition to any celebration, safety always comes first. Be sure to follow proper handling instructions and supervise children when using sparklers to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all. Plus, make sure you have water or a bucket of sand nearby to put used sparklers in once their finished.
