Everything You Need to Know About Scarborough’s Goldwings Light Parade & Firework Display

Scarborough’s Goldwings Light Parade and Firework Display is set to return with a bang on Saturday, 14th September 2024. If you’re looking for a fun and unique way to spend an evening on the coast, this free event promises to deliver.

From the Goldwing motorcycles decked out in neon lights to a show-stopping fireworks display, there’s something for everyone to enjoy!

What’s Happening at the Goldwings Light Parade?

The fun kicks off with a static display of the around 100 Goldwings on West Pier from 12pm to 4pm. This is your chance to get up close and personal with these iconic bikes, meet the riders, and admire the neon and fluorescent lights that will light up the night. The Mayor of Scarborough, will be judging his favourite trike and drawing the grand raffle.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance will have a gift shop and tombola on West Pier, where you can grab some unique souvenirs and try your luck at winning fantastic prizes donated by local businesses like Olivers Mount Bike Racing, North Yorkshire Water Park, and the Stephen Joseph Theatre. It's a great opportunity to engage with the local community and support a worthy cause.

As the sun sets, the excitement builds for the main event! The Goldwings Light Parade begins at 8pm sharp, starting from the This Is The Coast Roadshow stage, next to the lifeboat station in South Bay. This year’s parade features around 100 Goldwing motorcycles from across the UK and beyond, each one decorated with bright neon lights and ridden by bikers in fancy dress.

The Parade Route

The illuminated Goldwings will head off from South Bay, travelling along Foreshore Road and Sandside, before making their way to Marine Drive and Royal Albert Drive. The parade will take in North Bay, reaching the turnaround point at Peasholm Roundabout, before heading back along the seafront to finish at West Pier.

It's a fantastic route that offers plenty of spots for spectators to catch a glimpse of the bikes as they pass by. Whether you’re standing on Marine Drive, around Peasholm Roundabout, or anywhere along the South Bay, you’ll be treated to a great view of the parade.

Free Seafront Party and Entertainment

The best thing about this is that it's a free seafront party, packed with entertainment from 6pm onwards. Head over to the This Is The Coast stage near the lifeboat station to enjoy music, games, and prizes hosted by Paddy, Tom Hooper, The Coast Crew, and their mascot dog, Rover Reporter.

Aside from the live music and games make sure to explore the seafront, where many South Bay businesses will remain open late into the evening. From local pubs offering warming drinks to fish and chip shops serving classic seaside treats, there  will also be plenty of ways to fuel up before or after the event.

Stick around for the countdown to the light parade at 8pm, followed by a thrilling fireworks display at 9:30pm which will light up the night sky over South Bay Beach. Trust us, you won’t want to miss it!

Road Closures and Parking

To ensure everyone’s safety and to keep the event running smoothly, there will be some road closures in place during the evening, including Foreshore Road, Sandside, and Marine Drive. Make sure you plan your journey accordingly and arrive early to secure a good spot to watch the parade and fireworks.

Best Spots to Watch the Fireworks

The fireworks display will be kicking off at 9:30pm from the beach in South Bay, so anywhere around South Bay will offer a great view. Scarborough Harbour, Foreshore Road, and The Esplanade are all fantastic vantage points to take in the show.

For those looking for a quieter spot, consider watching the fireworks from the top of the cliff paths along Marine Drive, or find a perch on the steps near the Spa Bridge for an elevated view. These spots not only offer a great view of the fireworks but also give you a chance to escape the larger crowds down by the harbour.

Make sure you grab a spot early – it’s going to be a popular event! And remember to bring a blanket and some snacks to make the night even more comfortable and memorable!

Supporting a Great Cause

While the event is free to attend, it’s all in aid of a fantastic cause. This year, the Goldwings Light Parade is raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Since its debut in Scarborough in 2008, the parade has raised over £62,000 for the RNLI Scarborough and Filey Lifeboat Stations. With your help, they hope to raise even more for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance this year.

There will be a Yorkshire Air Ambulance stall set up near the stage at West Pier, where you can make donations, buy raffle tickets, and support the cause. Last year, the event raised a staggering £9,491.63 – let’s see if we can beat that!

Every penny raised goes towards helping this vital service continue to save lives. So, enjoy the show and know that your donations are going to a great cause!

Making the Most of Your Visit

If you’re planning to visit the Goldwings Light Parade, here are a few tips to help you make the most of your visit:

  • Arrive Early: The event attracts large crowds, so aim to arrive early to find parking and secure a good spot for the parade and fireworks.
  • Bring a Camera: With all the dazzling lights and vibrant displays, this event offers plenty of photo opportunities. Don’t forget to capture some memories!
  • Stay Warm: In September the coastal breeze can get chilly in the evening. Be sure to bring a jacket or blanket to keep warm while you enjoy the festivities.
  • Support Local Businesses: Many local shops and cafes stay open late for the event, so grab a hot drink or snack and help support the community.
