The Procession Route

The procession through the picturesque streets of Knutsford is a highlight of the Royal May Day celebrations.

Beginning at 1:30 pm in Marshall's Yard, opposite St. John's Church, the children assemble eagerly for the grand march. At 2 o'clock, the procession sets off along Toft Road, where it merges with the May Queen's Court emerging from the Town Council Offices.

As the procession winds its way through the town, it passes landmarks such as Tatton Park entrance, Tatton Street, and Princess Street, before culminating on King Edward Road.

Join the spectators lining the streets to witness the spectacle of the procession and catch a glimpse of the May Queen and her court, accompanied by characters dressed in magnificent costumes.

Unique Customs

Experience the charm of Knutsford's unique customs during the May Day Festival, including the traditional practice of "sanding" the streets. Which is believed to date back to King Canute's victorious crossing of the Lily at Canute's Ford, now Knutsford

Admire vibrant mottoes and arabesques traced in bright-colored sand adorning the pavements, a delightful sight that adds to the festive feel. This age-old tradition, passed down through generations, reflects the town's rich heritage and community spirit.

Grand Fireworks Display

No grand celebration is complete without a firework display.

The finale of Knutsford Royal May Day is the spectacular Grand Fireworks Display, a dazzling extravaganza that lights up the night sky over Knutsford Heath.

Provided generously by John Collin's Funfairs, this annual tradition marks the culmination of the festivities on the Sunday following May Day (5th of May this year).

As dusk descends, gather with fellow revelers to witness the display of light and enjoy the historic tradition of Knutsford Royal May Day.
