Enjoy Truro’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks

Enjoy Truro’s New Year’s Eve Fireworks

If you’re looking for a family-friendly and affordable way to see out 2024, Truro’s New Year’s Eve fireworks and celebrations are a proper treat.

With two spectacular displays lighting up the Cornish sky and a warm community feel, it’s the perfect way to wrap up the year and start the next one with a bang – literally.

Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of the evening.

Two Fireworks Displays for Twice the Fun

Truro is spoiling us again this year with not one but two fireworks displays on Tuesday, 31st December.

First up is the family-friendly show at 7.30pm, ideal for little ones who might not make it to midnight. The colourful display will light up the skies early enough to allow kids to enjoy the magic of fireworks before being tucked up in bed.

For those with a bit more stamina, the traditional late-night display at midnight will help you welcome 2025 in style. Both shows are being counted down by town crier Lionel Knight – a lovely little nod to tradition – and are funded by Truro City Council’s events programme.

The fireworks themselves will be launched from the grounds of Truro School, but the best public viewing spot is on Lemon Quay. It’s an ideal central location, so you can grab some food or a hot drink beforehand and settle in for the show.

Making It Affordable for Families

If the words “family day out” usually make your wallet twitch nervously, there’s good news. Thanks to generous donations from locals and the Truro Property Trust Fund, the £3 voucher scheme is back. Meaning up to 500 children under 16 can enjoy a hot drink, snack, or even a ride on the carousel without a single groan from your bank account.

Vouchers are available for the family fireworks event and will be handed out from 6.30pm on a first-come, first-served basis. Head to the Lemon Street end of Lemon Quay (opposite the Hall for Cornwall) where volunteers will be waiting. The vouchers can be redeemed at either Raymond’s food stall or the Sausage Grill – perfect for warming up with a hot chocolate or nibbling on something tasty while you wait for the fireworks to start.

Paul Caruana, the man behind the voucher scheme, has also arranged for a team of litter-picking volunteers to tidy up the Truro School grounds on New Year’s Day. It’s great to see the community spirit alive and well, both on the night and the morning after.

Plan Your Evening – Getting There and What to Expect

If you’re coming into Truro for the celebrations, Lemon Quay is easy to find and right at the heart of the city. There’s ample parking in the surrounding car parks, and while it’ll likely be busy, Truro does a good job of keeping things organised. The Quay is also close to local bus stops if you’re leaving the car at home.

Truro’s compact layout means you won’t be trekking far for food or drinks either. The stalls on Lemon Quay will be serving up snacks, sweets, and warming treats to keep you fuelled while you wait for the countdown. And if you’re staying late for the midnight display, you’ll find plenty of pubs and restaurants nearby for a pre-fireworks pint or a bit of grub, we'd advise booking a table in advance if you want a  sit down meal.

For families heading to the early display, the timing couldn’t be better. With fireworks kicking off at 7.30pm, you can enjoy an evening out with the kids and still be back home before tantrums set in. Bring along hats, gloves, and maybe a blanket – it is December, after all – and you’re sorted.

A Proper Community Celebration

It’s no wonder Truro’s New Year’s Eve celebrations continue to draw crowds year after year. With free entry, brilliant fireworks, and a thoughtful voucher scheme ensuring everyone can join in, it’s a great example of how communities can come together to make something special.

As Truro mayor Cllr Carol Swain puts it, the event is “a great opportunity for the community to come together and welcome the New Year with a bang.” And she’s spot on. Whether you’re there with the kids for the early display or staying out late to toast the New Year, it’s set to be another fantastic New Year's Eve celebration.
