Drones vs. Fireworks: Causeway Coast Council Sticks With Fireworks

When it comes to lighting up the sky along Northern Ireland’s stunning north coast, it seems the good old-fashioned firework still holds its own. While Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council is open to the idea of drone displays in future, they’ve rightly pointed out that for now, fireworks remain the go-to choice — and for very good reason.

Thousands of spectators recently descended on Portstewart promenade for the Friday night festivities of the iconic North West 200. Among the rumble of bikes and buzz of street entertainment, it was the firework display that crowned the evening in spectacular style — a traditional finale that’s as much a part of the event as revving engines and the smell of chips in the sea air.

The Call for Change — And the Council’s Response

Following the event, an online petition surfaced, suggesting the Council swap fireworks for drone light shows to reduce environmental impact. In response, Causeway Coast and Glens Council released a statement acknowledging the suggestion but made one thing crystal clear: drones might be an interesting option down the line, but they’re currently far more expensive and can’t match the visual impact of fireworks.

The Council also reminded everyone that the fireworks used are made from biodegradable materials, and that after each event, they ensure thorough clean-up to minimise any leftover debris. It’s a responsible approach that lets everyone enjoy the spectacle without compromising care for the local environment.

Why Fireworks Still Steal the Show

Let’s be honest — while drone shows are clever, they don’t quite scratch the same itch. Fireworks have centuries of tradition behind them. They stir the senses. You see them, hear then and feel them. They bring communities together in a way few things can — and that was plain to see in Portstewart, as crowds young and old stood shoulder to shoulder, craning their necks skyward.

There’s also the fact that drone shows (at least ones worth watching) can come with eye-watering price tags. A high-quality drone display can cost double or even triple what a firework show does — and often, with less oomph. In terms of value for money and guaranteed crowd-pleasing brilliance, fireworks still reign supreme.

The Council's Sensible Approach

Rather than making a snap decision or jumping on a trend, the Council is doing what many other local authorities across the UK are doing — weighing up their options carefully, exploring innovation while sticking with what works.

They’ve made it clear that drones might have a place in the future, alongside fireworks, not necessarily instead of them. Which is exactly how it should be. The magic of fireworks isn’t something you swap out lightly — and for a coastal community that thrives on summer and seasonal events, fireworks are a cultural mainstay.
