Church Wars!

Church Wars!

The Greek Island of Chios is home to a small village with a very unusual custom.

The celebration, known as "rouketopolemos", takes place every year on the eve of Easter Sunday, shortly after midnight.

The village of Lagada goes ever so slightly bonkers and bombards their little church with explosives and home-made rockets.

This is madness and technically illegal on the small island, however, the local police happily turn a blind eye to the pyrotechnic japery, perhaps for fear that the incendiaries be directed towards them instead!
