Cambridge Bonfire Night 2024: Your Ultimate Guide to the Best Free Fireworks in Town!
It's that time of year again when we swap our lightweight jackets for big coats, grab a steaming cup of mulled something-or-other, and head out to watch things go bang in the night sky. And if you're anywhere near Cambridge, you’ll want to be heading to Midsummer Common on Tuesday, 5th November, for what is billed as the largest and most spectacular free fireworks display in the Eastern region. That’s right, folks – free!
What’s Happening?
This year’s bonfire night display kicks off at 7pm, and you'll want to be there in good time – it's one of those events where being fashionably late will leave you stuck behind a tree craning your neck. With around 25,000 people expected to attend, it’s a biggie, so grab your mates, wrap up warm, and get there early.
There’s more than just the pyrotechnics to keep you entertained. We’re talking food and confectionery stalls, a traditional bonfire, and a fairground that promises all the fun of the fair. It’s organised by Cambridge City Council, who do an incredible job keeping it free. They do, however, welcome donations, so dig deep if you can – every bit helps keep this fantastic event going.
How to Get There
First things first, parking. Don’t. Seriously, mate, don’t even think about it. It’s a right palaver. Instead, the smart money’s on using the additional Park & Ride services that will be running for the evening. Alternatively, get on your bike, jump on a bus, or just give those legs a good stretch and walk it. Not only is this more eco-friendly, but it’ll save you the stress of hunting for a parking space in the dark.
The event takes place at Midsummer Common, CB5 8DJ, which is a lovely spot, right by the River Cam, and easily accessible from most parts of the city. If you're travelling from further afield, Cambridge’s train station is about a 30-minute walk away, or a quick taxi ride if you’ve splashed out on some fireworks-themed attire and don’t fancy getting it creased.
Best Places to Watch
Of course, you could mingle with the masses down on Midsummer Common, soaking up that proper community feel – it’s one of those rare nights when it feels like the whole city has come out to play. But if the thought of being shoulder-to-shoulder with half of Cambridge doesn’t appeal, we’ve got a couple of sneaky alternatives.
First up, there’s Castle Hill. It’s a bit of a local secret (or at least it was, until now). It offers great views over the city, including the fireworks. It’s much less busy than the main event, but you'll still need to get there around 30 minutes early to snag a decent spot. Bring a flask and a blanket, and you’re sorted.
Alternatively, why not push the boat out and book a table at one of Cambridge's rooftop bars, like The Varsity? It might cost you a bit more than a spot on the grass, but there’s nothing quite like watching the sky light up with a cocktail in hand. Just imagine those Insta snaps!
Top Tips for the Night
- Arrive Early: Trust us on this. If you want a good spot, aim to get there before 6.30 pm.
- Wrap Up Warm: It’s November. In Britain. Enough said.
- Donate if You Can: Keep the fireworks free for everyone by chipping in a few quid.
The Verdict
Cambridge’s bonfire night on Midsummer Common is more than just a fireworks display; it's an evening where the whole city comes together under the November night sky. Whether you’re there for the flashing lights, the roaring bonfire, or just an excuse for a night out, it’s sure to be a memorable evening.
Make sure to mark the 5th of November on your calendar, dig out those winter woollies, and prepare for a night of top-notch entertainment. Whether you're watching from the main common, sneaking up to Castle Hill, or sipping a fancy cocktail from a rooftop bar, Cambridge's fireworks display is the place to be. And don’t forget, it's free – but your donations help keep it that way for years to come!
