In this incredibly busy little fishing port, they have over 100 boats making it the largest fishing fleet in the UK today. With food provenance being the ‘in thing’ with the UK’s top restauranteurs wanting to put on menu’s where it was caught, when and how, Brixham’s locally caught and sold produce has received international acclaim due to the fishing management policy which protects the future fishing industry and the sustainability not only of the fish stocks but those of local cuttlefish and scallops.

Out and about in the area, budding novelists or even just those who enjoy a decent murder mystery will be charmed by a visit to Greenway, the white Georgian house built in the 1780’s and latterly the holiday des res of non-other than the late great Agatha Christie and her family. The house is packed with her works and photographs. In the library, you can even hear excerpts from audio files from Agatha Christie’s grandson about his family holidays at Greenway. The trip to Greenway can be quite charming too as the local Steam Railway runs into Greenway Halt, the local platform and then a stroll through woodland until you reach the house.

Alternatively, a 12-mile drive away is the Babbacombe Model Village which has 413 miniature buildings and has been opened for a staggering 55 years. This is an excellent day out and have been there as a child I can say first hand that it is a lovely walk and makes small children out of everyone there.

Make a week or a weekend of it but try to get along to the summer festival at Brixham to show your support.

The fireworks will take place around 9.50pm (nightfall) and will be the responsibility again this year of the professional firing team from Firemagic.
