Blackpool 2010 Set For Weekend Fireworks Show

    Fireworks in Blackpool

BLACKPOOL’S fabulous fireworks competition is set to be rolled into one explosive weekend.

A new format will see this autumn’s popular festival staged three nights in a row rather than over five different weekends.

There is also a new location, with fireworks being set off from the beach between Central and South Piers – rather than from North Pier – where there is space for spectators to gather and enjoy the show.

The pyrotechnic displays, on September 10, 11 and 12 – a week after the Illuminations are switched on – will be billed as a Champion of Champions extravaganza featuring winners from previous festivals.

Previously held over five weekends, the new format now allows tourism businesses in the resort to package the whole weekend.

The aim is not only to bring visitors into town but to persuade them to extend their usual stay for fireworks from a drive-in visit to a bumper weekend of fireworks, Illuminations and attractions, as well as spending money in shops, restaurants and bars.

Coun Maxine Callow, Blackpool Council’s cabinet member for regeneration and tourism, said: “This is set to be a fantastic weekend and offers a great opportunity to take an extended weekend break and enjoy our northern lights as the fireworks and illuminations take centre stage.”

The event will gather together the world’s firework elite and promises a mouth-watering series of shows with jaw-dropping entertainment for all the family. It’s also the weekend that the Tour of Britain is in town – so there’s a whole host of great reasons to visit Blackpool – by day and by night.

I must admit I did like the competition over a number of weekends but I am looking forward to the new venue. I think its going to be a great weekend as long as we have decent weather.

Jaw-dropping entertainment, I like those words! 5 days of fireworks condensed to 3 days should make this event very intense. Did you notice your blog posts are on this homepage? http://pyroplanet.com/index.php Lucky guy! Really dig your blog, best i've found so far on the net.

I’m so sorry to learn that you could not attend. I fully understand where your coming from and personally agree that it is better for everyone to stagger the event over a period of time. Lets hope that the Blackpool can win you back again :-)

      have the fireworks finished now

    • dissapointed

This is rubbish, I whole heartedly agree with the comments from ad it with the council, I am really dissapointed about missing the fireworks this year and I probably won’t bother going in the future. In 2009 the streets were packed full, cars stopped in the roads to watch, people ran from their cars down to the sea front to watch. There were hundreds of people, many local who travelled especially to see them. We all travelled the 35 minute journey (which would turn into well over an hour with Friday night traffic and people trying to get to the sea front) each week especially to see the fireworks whilst the competition was on. We have no interest in staying overnight, but do buy food and drink, pay for car parking, perhaps buy a few other bits whilst there. Once a week this journey is fine, it makes a nice evening out, but do I want to travel that journey each evening on the one weekend? No. Will I do this? No. I’m not the only one. This idea seems short sighted to me. Have the organisers even consider the reprocussions if in future years the event is a wash out and has to be cancelled?
