With over 37,000 people expected to attend, the Leicester Diwali display is the biggest outside of India.

Centred around Belgrave Road, in the heart of the City and with a Diwali village being specially erected on the Cossington Street recreation park, this year promises to be the best celebration of the start of the new Hindu Year to date.

Traditional elements from the Hindu culture will blend with computerised fireworks to create one of the world’s best Diwali spectaculars with all things Asian; from mouth-watering foods, and traditional and ritualistic dancing the city will explode in vibrant colours.

There will be not one but two firework displays; the first to welcome the lights on Sunday the 16th of October 2016 with the main display on the Night of Diwali the 30th October 2016.

Between the 14th and the 30th sees the return of last year’s popular 110 foot “wheel of light” affording those taking the wheel spectacular panoramic views of the City for a small fee of £5 for adults. It is £4 for children shorter than 1.4M along with card carrying students and OAP’s. You can also purchase a family ticket giving access to 4 people – this can be two adults and two children or one adult and 3 children for just £15.

The wheel will operate from Monday to Friday from 12 noon until 8pm, on Saturday from noon until 10pm, on Sunday the 16th when the official light switch on takes place and on the night of Diwali, the 30th the ride will be extended until 11pm.

Pyro professional Bright Spark who are co-ordinating and firing the display advise the show will be a multi-level show with many new and exciting effects as Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights the show will certainly depict this.

The Knokke-Heist Firework festival is the oldest firework festival in Europe and one of the most prestigious awards available.  The event ran from the 17th August to the 25th August and featured professional firing teams from Italy, Philippines, Croatia and of course the UK.

First up, Lieto from Italy;  The track selection for the initial part of the display was Italian Opera which suited the firework effects perfectly before changing to the haunting track Only Time by Enya which added a hypnotic melody with some absolutely perfectly shells and glittering gold horse tails.  Then the track went onto an upbeat Volare which suited the remaining pyro beautifully.

Not as clean and precise as we have come to expect from Italy but there was absolutely no doubting the quality of the perfectly spherical blue peony shells.  Good effort.

Next to fire, Platinum Fireworks from the Philippines.  The track selections were random by any stretch of the imagination from In the Flesh from Pink Floyd to I’ve got the music in me from Kiki Dee but the opening sequence to Robbie William’s Let Me Entertain You was awesome.  There were some beautiful crossing rainbow comets and nice butterfly and jellyfish shells but they appeared a little out of time with the track.  Really nice but not in my opinion strong enough to beat the mighty Mirnovec or Pyrotex but we would have to wait a little longer to see the outcome.

Penultimate competitors from Croatia were the pro team from Mirnovec Pirotehnika.  Their opening track was the Grease Megamix which was really entertaining but there was a tube on the left which was clearly firing the wrong way and after that section, there appeared to be an incredibly long delay to the second track.  However, once the ABBA section got under way with the track SOS, it was delightful to see the S O S being spelt out in blue.  The fast firing rainbow coloured crossing comets was lovely too.  The finale; a sky full of huge willow breaks brought an end to a brilliant show which was clearly well supported by the crowd.

Final competitors; Pyrotex Fireworx from the UK; Now they are having a brilliant couple of years and are in the process of filling up their trophy cabinet in earnest.  They have already lifted the first place in the Italian Dancing Fireworks Festival and of course, the mega win at the PIPC this year so they were already on a high.

Another absolutely outstanding display from Pyrotex with a really clever track list; the display truly was a lesson in precision with some of the tightest firing I have ever seen.  The pyro and the music took the audience through an emotional journey and it was mesmerising with a symmetry second to none.  The whole of the show was astonishing and brought me close to tears it was so good.  Their groundwork is on another level and every conceivable shape was precise and timed to perfection and I particularly liked the rainbow coloured section with the rainbow peony bursts above.  Beautiful throughout.

The finale display was put on by organisers H C Pyrotechnics who again had a lovely variety of colours and effects and they were really clean.  The shape shells were gorgeous but some of the latter products in the display looked a little washed out.

Knokke-Heist 2016 : Closing Fireworks

Last weekend saw three of the best professional teams from around the world battle it out at Flammende Sterne Ostfildern or Blazing Star Firework Competition.

The setting for this magical event is in the town of Ostfildern, a picturesque little town in Germany, just South of Stuttgart.

The competition started back in 2003 and continues to gain support from pyro lovers from around the world. It is a three day festival which attracts tens of thousands of visitors annually.

Competing this year were representatives from the Czech Republic, Portugal and China.

First up to fire on Friday 19th August was the team from Flash Barrandov representing the beautiful Czech Republic. Flash started out in the business originally in 1934 providing special effects to the growing European film industry and today, it remains the biggest film studio in Europe. They have supplied the SFX for blockbusters like The Bourne Identity, Mission Impossible, The Transporter and Casino Royale to name just a few.

Their music track list was entertaining and choreographed with the fireworks beautifully. The display was brilliantly done and the timing impressive. The notable pieces in this display to my mind were the strobing red chrysanthemums, the beautifully clear blue comets and some vivid purple crossettes which were gorgeous. The real crowd pleaser were the rainbow peonies and the beautiful willow bursts. Great effort team Flash Barrandov.

Next to display; Macedos Pirotecnia on Saturday 20th August were representing Portugal.

The opening sequence was gorgeous and the strobing shells were on another level entirely. Pinks, golds, greens; absolutely tremendous.

Sadly, as the display grew so did the amount of smoke. It did get to a point where the display was engulfed in a huge smoke cloud making it impossible to see the higher effects as they were completely obscured.

A great mix of tracks from the great rock and roll years and of course, no show would be complete without a smattering of ‘Queen!’

Shame about the smoke as it definitely impacted on everyone’s enjoyment but we will have to see what the results say.

Finally to fire; Hefung Fireworks on Sunday 21st August who were representing China.

Hefung Fireworks is one of the biggest manufacturers of fireworks in China.

Their display was nothing short of beautiful – absolutely incredible with some really pretty combinations and shell effects rarely seen in the UK. Really crisp, clean and clear effects and massive shells – notable a blue peony with a silver pistil centre, colour changing peonies. The timing and precision on the groundwork was in another league completely.

The winners were announced and we are delighted to confirm that Cindy and Davo representing Hefung Fireworks won first place. VERY WELL DONE.
