How to get a Robot to set off fireworks using LEGO NXT

Using a LEGO MINDSTORMS NXT, this video shows how to put up a safe fireworks show for the whole family.

Q. How can this robot can help people?

There has been a lot of concern lately about fireworks maiming and injuring the person igniting it and a few cases of fatalities.

This autonomous NXT robot will light multiple fireworks in a sequence – while the family sits back and watch the display!!

It uses a MINDSTORMS NXT, two light sensors (one for navigation and other to detect a lighted fuse) and an Ultrasonic detector (to adjust the torch arm height depending on the height of the fireworks fuse wire. It uses three motors – two for motion and the third for the torch arm elevator.

Rocket Mania

This is a video of the 300,000 rockets fired at the Mikuni Fireworks Festival, held at WadaBeach, Fukui, Japan in 2004.

Each year, they try to add a few more to the mix as back in 2003, they fired 200,000 rockets and then in 2004, 300,000 rockets and the festival continues annually much to the delight of the thousands of firework fans who make their way along every year.  The fireworks are second to none, all huge and filling the sky with bright colours and loud noises and with effects from HUGE shell bursts which hang in the air for an age to smiley faces and love hearts.

BRAINIAC Science Abuse: Firework Racing

Richard Hammond, of Top Gear (and of course any number of voice-overs and Total Wipe-out) is also a massive fan of the science behind any number of inventions and tests and his fabulous programme, essentially aimed at 10-year olds (both children and so-called ‘adult’ men) tests our which will be the faster between a firework rocket, a golf ball and a motorbike.

All three were lined up and ready to move as quickly as possible to find out which was the faster. The golf ball weighs around 45gms only and was struck by a club with a graphite shaft and a titanium head. The rocket was a large one which reaches a maximum of 250ft in around 6/8 seconds and finally, the motorbike, at the hands of Richard Hammond top speed 190mph were all ready to take the test.

The motorbike had to have a moving start so Hammond drove back from the start line and at the moment he crossed, the golfer struck the ball and the rocket got under way.

The timings:

ROCKET – 6.16 seconds
BIKE – 6.18 seconds
GOLF BALL – Lost 🙁

So, the answer is, if you are late for work, don’t take the bike, strap a HUGE rocket to yourself and you will be there in no time at all.
