Witness one of the most iconic events in the Scottish cities calendar, in the esplanade of the castle with the show set against the beautiful backdrop of Edinburgh Castle.
The Edinburgh Military Tattoo is an annual series of Military Tattoo’s as performed by British, Commonwealth and International military band representatives. The event has been held every August for 70 years. The word ‘tattoo’ is derived from a Dutch expression to ‘turn off the tap’ which was an instruction to the local hostelry to close the pubs so that the soldiers would be forced to return to camp.
The first event took place in 1949 and was a simple band stand show aimed at bringing the Army’s contribution to the international festival. The displays take place every day (apart from Sunday) and on a Saturday there are two shows. Fireworks were added to the mix in 2012 and they have been an intrinsic part of the feel of the show throughout.
Witness skills and talents from the British Armed forces, the commonwealth and military teams from around the world perform with the addition of Scottish tradition and a fantastic fireworks finale in the evenings. For the pyro lovers amongst you, there will be an extended firework finale on Saturday evenings sending the evening out with a bang.
The show begins with a fanfare before a performance by the massed pipes and drums who all march out onto the parade square. Each different contingent will then perform including Highland Dancers, special representatives from the Commonwealth Countries and last year, there were performances from the Czech Armed Forces and the Shetland Fiddlers.
On offer is a wide range of ticket options for across the 25 performances, standard seats range from £25 to £90. Along with this, there is premier seating, royal gallery seating and exclusive packages available where you can sip champagne of the castle ramparts, view the largest Scottish whiskey collection in the world and even mingle with the performers. All the exclusive packages include extraordinary Scottish dining experiences with tickets.
