Knokke Heist is a municipality in West Flanders in Belgium and is the country’s answer to Marbella with a huge array of swanky shops, a Casino, and several art galleries and plays home to some of Belgium’s fashionable elite in the mansions and shuttered homes in the area. Out and about, there are several art galleries, museums and eating out in one of the many fine dining restaurants dotted about, including the two Michelin starred Bartholomeus.

The fireworks festival in Knokke Heist has taken place since 1970 and due to its fast-growing popularity year upon year, the competition is now known to compete with some of the most prestigious competitions around the world such as Cannes, Monte Carlo, and many others.

The fireworks festival is one of the biggest held on the Belgium coast and is an ideal ending to the summer holidays for both the locals and thousands of tourists that visit each year.

The competition is fierce with only 4 places up for grabs, some of the world’s best fireworks manufacturers and firers pull out all the stops to make sure that they get a chance at taking part in hope to the win the big award.

Each competitor is marked on a certain assessment criterion this is on colour, synchronisation, harmony, and originality. The competitors are judged by a jury made up of local celebrities, sponsors, artists and professional firework technicians and even the audience have a chance to vote.

This year’s competitors are as follows:

Friday 17th August – Fantasias – France
Sunday 19th August – Makalu Fireworks – Czech Republic
Tuesday 21st August – Panzera Fireworks – Italy
Thursday 23rd August – Surex Fireworks – Poland
Saturday 25th August – Prize Ceremony & Closing show by HC Pyrotechnics (not included in the competition)

The final day is for pure entertainment and to crown the winners with a firework spectacular in the evening synchronised to a specially chosen piece of music.

Just to get you in the mood and to show you what kind of performance the competitors need to put on why not take a look at 2017 winners show SteyFire from Austria.

Good Luck from Epic Fireworks to all the competitors!
