Malta Fireworks Festival 29th and 30th April 2011

The annual Malta International Fireworks Festival is organised by the Parliamentary Secretariat for Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority. The Grand Harbour will provide the setting for the festival, which takes place on 29th and 30th April 2011.

The best vantage points to enjoy the spectacle will be from Barriera Wharf on the Valletta seafront or from the bastions of the harbour.

There will be lots of firework displays synchronised to music over the two nights, with a variety of Maltese fireworks factories competing for the very best display.

Fireworks in Malta have a long long tradition which goes back to the time of the Order of the Knights of St John. The feu de joie, the musketterija, the solfarelli d'aria, St Catherine's wheels (irdieden) and other forms of fireworks, originated from explosives that were lit from mortars on special occasions, such as the election of a Grand Master or the birth of a prince.

The Malta Fireworks festival also serves to commemorate Malta's accession into the European Union that took place on 1st May 2004.

Below is the Malta Fireworks Festival video from 2010. Enjoy.
