Blackpool World Fireworks Championships 2011

Once again the dark sky will be lit up for four weekends as Blackpool’s World Fireworks Championships is set to be a month-long firework spectacular once more. Hooray.

Last year the event, which draws tens of thousands of people to the resort’s seafront, was reduced to a single weekend while regeneration work was carried out on the Promenade.

This year the Blackpool World Fireworks championships are again to be staged over four consecutive Fridays starting on September 9, with a fifth night in the pipeline if a sponsor can be found.

Head of VisitBlackpool Natalie Wyatt said: “We're delighted this event is to be held over four Fridays and we are looking for a sponsor for a fifth Friday.

“It was only held over one weekend last year because of the work on the Promenade.

“However, we don’t know what cuts lie ahead for next year, so we are seeking a potential sponsorship deal.”

Claire Smith, president of hoteliers group StayBlackpool welcomed the move,

She said: “Illuminations Saturdays are easy to fill so having the fireworks on a Friday or a Sunday is great because it means people will stay an extra night".

“And if we can get a fifth weekend, that will be even better".

“They are a spectacular show and it is free and really draws people in".

“The timing is also good in September when there can be a bit of a slow start to the Illuminations before the October half-term kicks in".
